The Benefits of Dental Implants
Dentists everywhere are recommending dental implants. These are the closest way you can get to healthy, natural teeth without dealing with the impairments and setbacks of, say, dentures. Dental implants can improve a patient’s quality of life in more ways than one, and are becoming an increasingly popular option among patients.
It is the only dental restoration technique that actually preserves your natural bone, which ends up stimulating bone growth. This blog will offer a rundown of the functions and benefits of this restoration method.
Dental Implants function like tooth roots, placed in your jawbone like screws, except instead of just staying there they actually bond with your natural bone. These implants serve as the base for where your crowns, or artificial teeth, are connected. The connector between implant and crown is called the abutment.
The benefits of dental implants are limitless. For one, your crowns are modeled after your real teeth, so your adjustment to the dental implants will be as smooth as possible. Not only do they look good, but once fused with your bones the implants become permanent.
This strong connection to the bone makes speaking and eating easier. With dentures, your teeth may slip and slide within your mouth, while with implants you can speak and chew food without this worry. Not having to remove the dentures, too, makes it much more comfortable.
The surgery itself can be a long process, taking many months. X rays and 3D images of your teeth will be taken. Your teeth will be examined before the surgery to determine which ones need replacement.
There are multiple outpatient stages in the surgery, where you will be given time to heal between each procedure. Among these procedures is damaged tooth removal, jawbone grafting, and various healing and implant placements. Bone grafting is necessary if your jawbone is too soft or not thick enough.
Now, onto the specifics: When placing the dental implant, the surgeon cuts open your gum, exposing the bone, where holes are then drilled to fit the metal implant post.
After this procedure, you must wait a period of time for the bone to grow before your abutment placement surgery, a quicker, easier surgery wherein your gum is reopened to fit the abutment on the metal implant.
A two week healing period is required before your new artificial teeth, modeled after your own mouth, are attached. After the surgeries, you will need ample time to heal, which may require pain medications or antibiotics.
As you can see, getting dental implants is a long, involved process. But, it pays off swimmingly, and the majority of these surgeries are successful, leaving the patient happy with their new set of teeth. As always, practice good oral hygiene to lessen the need for extensive dental restoration.
It’s so cool that dental implants function like actual tooth roots. My grandmother has a hard time remembering to put in her dentures, so I’ve been wondering if dental implants would be better for her. Thanks for explaining dental implants and their pros and cons.
Dentures can be easily misplaced or lost. Having the ability to take them in and out, and comfort we hear this often. With implants she would not have to worry about loosing her dentures again. We would to give her a free consultation and discuss her options.
You made a good point that dental implants function like tooth roots. I’ve been worried about getting implants for some of my missing teeth as I wasn’t sure how effective they’ll stay in. Maybe I should clear some things with my dentist to make sure I know what I’m getting into.
Thomas there are a few option for restoring multiple teeth with implants, as you can image each person and dental treatment varies. Implant are extremely effective and can change ones smile in a day. They will function as “natural” teeth giving you the ability to chew without restrictions. Implants are a game changer when it comes to function.
Thank you for pointing out that because implants have a strong connection to the bone, it’s easier to speak. I think I’m going to lose one of my teeth and I don’t want to stand out in a classroom or at work. I’ll have to look further into dental implants.
An implant is the best treatment when restoring missing teeth. I personally have an implant towards the front of my smile line. My worrying went away once I had an implant placed. I too work with the public and was afraid one day my tooth would just fall out. My implant has given my the confidence to smile but also a worry free mind.
Thanks for pointing out that not only do dental implants look good, but once fused with your bones the implants become permanent. I am thinking about getting dental implants because I lost a couple of teeth in a car accident a while ago and I would like to have my smile back. I think that it would be nice that they were more permanent because I think that would make them easier to care for and would help me not worry about them as much so that I could be more confident.
Implants are the best treatment, in most cases, to restore missing teeth. You still need to care for them as far as brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist for regular check up appointments. Implants are integrated to the bone, so it does help build confidence and can give you the smile you want and love.
It’s interesting that implants can preserve our natural bone and stimulate bone growth, which is unique among dental restoration treatments. My brother lost some teeth in a bad accident, so I’ve been trying to help him out by researching options for tooth replacement. Thanks for sharing this article and helping me understand some of the benefits that dental implants offer.

I thought that it made sense when you said that during the dental implant process there are different outpatient stages to allow the patient time to heal in between procedures. I have been thinking about having dental implants installed in my mouth but I have been worried that it would be too painful. Now that I understand that the dental surgeon will give you time to heal in between procedures, I will be sure to consider receiving dental implants.
Patients are typically very surprised with how little if any discomfort is involved during and after an implant procedure, the anxiety thinking about it is worse than the actual procedure. For myself having an implant has been the best choice of restoring my missing tooth. Please let me know if you would like to come in for a complimentary consultation.
Thanks for writing about dental implants. It’s interesting to learn that you should wait some time before the abutment placement surgery. You mentioned two weeks should be good, and I’m interested to learn if there are times where you should wait even longer.

It was interesting to learn that implants are fused with your bones so they become permanent. My dad is getting older and his teeth are starting to get really fragile. It could be really nice for him to get some implants to replace the ones that are getting really weak.
It was interesting when you said that once the implant fuses to the bone, it becomes permanent. One of my cousins is missing a tooth due to an accident he had. I’ll recommend him to get a dental implant instead of a crown.
After becoming involved in a car accident, I lost my confidence to smile because I lost some of my teeth. I think I’ll get all-on-4 dental implants if this will bring my smile back. It’s really interesting that placing a dental implant requires the opening of the gum and then drilling a metal rod into the bone. This seems like it would be a really effective way to get a fake tooth in without it damaging you or potentially coming out like a denture. So having one would probably be pretty convenient because you wouldn’t have to take it out when eating either!
Implants are not removable like dentures. They are meant to stay in place securing a denture to it so you can be worry free when talking and eating. It helps you to regain function and the smile you have always dreamed of.
I had no idea that dental implants actually preserve your natural bone. My mother has a missing tooth that she wants to get fixed. I’ll recommend that she find a dentist that can give her implants.
pretty practical stuff, overall I consider this is worth a bookmark, thanks
My mother lost one of her front teeth when she had a biking accident a month ago. It’s great to know that dental implants can preserve my mother’s natural bone which will help her to prevent her jaw from becoming disfigured. I suppose it would help if she asks an expert regarding this because she might want to inquire more about how the procedure is done.
I didn’t realize that dental implants preserves the natural bone, which stimulates bone growth. This probably allows for the implant to become stronger and act like a natural tooth would. And you could eat and drink whatever you would like without having to worry about your tooth slipping out or moving in anyway.
That is correct, you can chew basically any foods worry free. The implant and bone integrate together to provide strength as a natural tooth.
Thank you for sharing the benefits of dental implants, I didn’t knew that the restoration technique can preserve our natural bone and as mentioned above, after the implantation of metal it takes two weeks to heal, so that they become permanent.
I recently lost my tooth due to a car accident, that’s why I’m considering dental implants. It’s quite scary to think that a surgeon would cut my gum open. I am willing to endure this as long as I’ll be able to find a reliable and excellent dentist.
The process may sound intimidating, but overall it is a fairly simple procedure. Most patients once completed say the anxiety before hand is much worse than the Implant procedure. We would love to set up a consultation appointment with you, complimentary. Please call to schedule 503 334 0930.
It’s good to know that a two-week healing period is needed before you can attach the teeth so you can make sure they’re stable. I’ve read that the metal actually fuses to your bone! That’s really cool that we can create something that our body will accept as its own.
Implants are amazing to help restore missing teeth. The implant integrates to the bone.
It’s nice that dental implants bond with the bones. My grandmother isn’t very good at wearing her dentures, so her teeth are moving around. Perhaps she may benefit from dental surgery.
It’s good that you point out that dental implants can give you a replacement that is close to the look and feel of your natural teeth. I lost a tooth recently, and I am considering having it replaced with a dental implant. I’m going to look for a good dental clinic in my area that does implants.
This is so informative post! Thank you for sharing and clearing doubts about dental implants
It is interesting that you need time for the bone to grow before the abutment placement surgery. Our daughter broke her tooth while at college this last week and she may need a dental implant. We may recommend that she talks to a dentist or some other professional for recommendations.
Thank you for all this great information about dental implants! I really like that you say that they are actually good for the jawbone, keeping it stable. It would be nice to know that your bones won’t be damaged in the end.
I appreciate your explanation of what dental implants are and how they work. One of my teeth was damaged recently and might need to be pulled the rest of the way out. Maybe I should look into getting an implant to replace it if that happens.
It’s good to know that they use your real teeth for the model of the crown so that it fits perfectly in your mouth. This is great because I always wondered if a fake tooth would be noticeable or not. My uncle is missing a tooth and is a little self-conscious about it so maybe he would like to get a dental implant. He’d be able to have his full smile again which would make me so happy.
I am glad you mention that with dental implants you are able to preserve the natural bone and can possibly stimulate bone growth.
